Plants are at the root of most pharmaceuticals. In naturopathic medicine, rather than simply giving you a single element we give you the whole plant. The wonderful properties of the plant are gentle, but effective, with far fewer side effects than pharmaceuticals. Most patients will receive either a tincture – a liquid combination of herbal extracts – encapsulated herbs, or custom teas to take on a daily basis. What’s it like? Well, the pills and teas are fine, but the tinctures don’t taste too great. In the words of Buckley’s – it tastes awful, but it works!
Water cure is at the core of Naturopathic Medicine. We harness the healing powers of water to reduce inflammation and detoxify. Contrast showers, sitz baths, constitutional hydrotherapy treatments and more are used to alleviate the symptoms of both acute and chronic illnesses. What’s it like? Imagine going to the spa – that’s what it’s like.
Hands-on therapy is a necessary component of healing. Naturopathic doctors are trained in massage and spinal manipulation to offer a full-spectrum of care to their patients to alleviate stress, pain, and acute illness.
Naturopathic doctors want to help you achieve a healthy lifestyle. We spend between 1 & 2 hours with our patients. During this time much can be discussed from mental/emotional concerns, stress, and general implementation of a healthy lifestyle. We’ll work with you to develop healthy habits that fit in with your lifestyle. We are the ultimate preventative-medicine docs!
Naturopathic doctors are trained as primary care doctors here in the province of Ontario. We can take the burden off your general practitioner by offering full health check ups, including well-woman exams.
Traditional Chinese Medicine is rooted in the flow of Qi (or energy) through the body. Using acupuncture (a form of needle work) and herbs we can manipulate the Qi to balance out the Yin (grounding, cooling elements) with the Yang (rising, hot elements). It’s an excellent therapy for stress relief, pain management and acute conditions. What’s it like? I promise it doesn’t hurt. You may feel a little pinch upon needle insertion, but that sensation goes away quickly and you are left feeling relaxed.
More and more couples are having trouble conceiving due in large part to unhealthy lifestyle choices and exposures. Naturopathic medicine addresses all aspects of fertility and works hand in hand with conventional fertility treatments helping couples achieve healthy pregnancies.
Pregnancy is special time when a women’s body has unique needs to maintain both her health and that of her growing baby. We will work closely with you to address these needs and any other concerns that may arise through each stage of your pregnancy. Whether its morning sickness, proper prenatal nutrition, swelling or preparing your body for labour. We are here to help you know what to expect when you are expecting.
Becoming a new mom is an amazing experience, but also presents with many challenges. Ensuring that you are getting all the nutrition you need post partum, while caring for your new little bundle of joy all the while sleep deprived and recovering from labour can be hard for most moms. We’ll take care of you while you take care of your baby.
Nutrition starts with what you put on your plate and ends with supplementation. Naturopathic doctors are highly trained to educate their patients on whole food selection to benefit any number of health concerns or general well being. We also employ individual nutrients to provide relief and prevention from dis-ease through supplementation. We do our best not to send our patients home with a cupboard full of pills. We will investigate exactly what you need and provide you with a streamlined arsenal of foods and supplements tailored to your needs.
A major part of an initial assessment with your naturopathic doctor will involve a look at your latest blood work. We love a good ‘ol complete blood count, but we really love to get even more detailed information on hormone levels, vitamin and mineral status, as well as cholesterol, inflammatory markers, food allergies, and more. Here are a few specialty tests Dr. Rachel runs...
CONVENTIONAL BLOOD TESTS: Just like the standard testing your MD would run. This includes tests like - cholesterol, thyroid panel, vitamin B12, iron, vitamin D, etc.
FOOD SENSITIVITY TESTING: A quick blood draw at the lab can help you identify food sensitivities that may be causing any number of health complaints.
SALIVARY HORMONE TESTING: Salivary hormone testing is often more accurate than blood hormone testing. Dr. Rachel will look for hormone imbalances in both women and men that can cause PMS, infertility, low sex drive, fatigue, depression, and mood swings.
STOOL ANALYSIS: To investigate chronic digestive symptoms such as persistent diarrhea, constipation, bloating, indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome, GERD, and malabsorption. Stool samples are used to objectively evaluate the status of beneficial and imbalanced bacteria, pathogenic bacteria, yeast, and parasites present in the intestinal tract.
Sometimes nutrition and supplements just aren’t enough. That is when injection therapy is considered as a tool for boosting a patient’s overall health. Intramuscular B12 injections can increase energy levels, improve sleep quality, improve your mood, and support a healthy cardiovascular system.
